Navigators (Grades 5-8)
Our middle group of students is going places! These tweens and young teens learn to take responsibility for their own educational journey as they slowly transition into more formal learning. Extra help with study skills, organization, and other executive functioning tasks gives students the tools they need to be successful while time spent building social skills and self-awareness helps each individual navigate what can be tricky transitional years. In this iteration of our curriculum cycle, Navigators begin to delve deeper into history, literature, science, and philosophy, honing their critical thinking skills and developing a powerful personal voice in written and oral responses.
Many of our students at this level are "reluctant" writers and/or readers. Often they have had less than stellar experiences with school in the past. Our goal at Metanoia is to grant these learners ownership of their education and hopefully encourage them to fall in love with books and learning in the process! Along the way, we celebrate successes and brainstorm solutions to roadblocks as a supportive, accepting community. New skills are broken into small pieces and scaffolded into major successes. For students who are already thriving, the degree of personal choice and freedom offered at Metanoia allows lots of independent exploration and chances to share individual passions and expertise.
